For those who are interested, you can spend many hours on trionic tuning forums (google) and figure out how to do this yourself, or talk to your friendly Saab tuner. If your time is of any value the tuner is a better option.
Saab started selling E85-capable T7 9-5's in 2006 and some very bright people back-ported the firmware to support basically all B205/B235 variants. Tuners have taken it further to create monster-torque beasts.
My 10 year old 2000 9-3 HOT (T7) is a new car again. Smooth power, less noticeable turbo lag. A world of difference driving around town where the low-end torque makes the car much more drive-able.
In a T7 it is like magic. After filling up, you drive for 30 seconds then get a message in the SID like "Refueled 49 lit (E85)" and the ECU adjusts timing and fuel maps to the mix of ethanol/gasoline in the tank.
Right now E85 in my area is about 20% cheaper than 91 octane premium. I've been getting around 20% lower fuel economy on E85 than gasoline around town, so it's a wash economically. They say to expect 30% lower fuel economy but I find that the good low-end torque means I'm not mashing the gas pedal as much so I'm driving more efficiently.
My car is otherwise completely stock. I have the original fuel pump at 120K mi so I'll be looking to replace that with one that is more E85 compatible. I understand the Saab Biopower cars that were designed for E85 have stainless steel intake valves since ethanol attracts water and can cause rust, but I haven't heard of people having any problems with the regular carbon steel valves.
