...talk about a bit of a tangent.
While I agree that a Sonett III isn't worth anywhere near $25K, I simply don't understand your reasoning. And, when you say "Sonett" in your post, I'm assuming you're referring to the III (not the I, II or V4).
As for the "plastic" vs. "thick steel" comment, vintage (and current) Corvettes have fiberglass skins, too, and they command exponentially higher prices at auction than a Sonett III. While you may prefer a steel or aluminum bodied car to one made of fiberglass, I don't think that has anything to do with its value in the marketplace.
I also think there is a lot that is unique about the Sonett. Why does it matter if it was designed in Sweden, Italy or Zimbabwe? Did its design go against the grain of familiar car design the way a c900 did? No, but to me there's a lot more to a SAAB than an idiosyncratic design and a key on the floor.
What exactly makes it derivative? How many other FWD sports cars were available in 1970? How many had built in roll bars? Aside from the Corvette, how many sports cars in 1970 offered pop-up headlights? For a production car, they're relatively rare in that only 10K or so were ever made. Doesn't that alone makes them somewhat unique?
Moreover, why does it matter if the Sonett III was designed by an Italian or if it has a Ford engine? The Sonett also shared its engine with a number of other SAABs of the same era, so I'm curious why its Taunus sourced v4 detracts from its "SAAB-ness" while you haven't criticized the other SAABs with which it shared an engine. Will the fact that my TT roadster had an engine and chassis sourced from VW automatically relegate it to the shadows of history? How about the fact that it was a German car designed by an American? Does any of this really make it any less important as a design study or a car in general? The Porsche 356 was based (in almost every possible way) on a VW Beetle! Does that make it less of an icon or less of a Porsche?
I'm not arguing that the 92, 93, 96, 99, and c900s weren't (and aren't) great cars. My love of SAABs came from my first experience with a c900 as a kid. Unfortunately, in my opinion, what makes the Sonett so inexpensive to buy today has nothing to do with its design or its fiberglass body. Car collectors simply don't collect SAABs. Vintage SAAB enthusiasts collect vintage SAABs. Its a simple fact that while we might all share a love for these unique cars, that love isn't shared by most of the buying public.
Sonetts were produced in such limited numbers few of our families ever owned them and even fewer of us ever saw them on the road, in movies, or in magazines. While there is a limited supply, its also in limited demand (relatively speaking). How many people have 20 Shelby Cobras rotting on their farms?
