Well the old 9-3 can probably run loops around many cars in the States, but it sure can't in Europe. Practically all the most sold cars here, even much cheaper ones, handle better. The extra torque won't help it out of the corners, it will just spin the inside tire even more.
I can quote the biggest car mag here in Denmark when they did a preview on the new 9-3 (and they are not anti-SAAB):
"From a sporting point of view the old 9-3 was about as fun to drive as a garden tractor with 4 flat tires"
The article went on to praise the new 9-3 on it's excellent handling and raving about it overall. Now I'm not basing my opinion on a just a car mag, I've also driven a NG900 loaner, and I was absolutely horrified by it's handling.
Now I'm not saying that I wouldn't like more power in the 9-3SS, I'm just pointing out that it won't be slower than the "old" ones, except the Viggen, which will get a successor in a couple of years.
