Just because the old 9-3's peak torque is listed at 2200-4800 and the new one's is listed at 2500-4500 doesn't mean that the old engine produces more torque in those 300 rpm areas. For all we know the new engine is making 215 lb-ft there, still more than the old one, but less than it's peak. The peak is just that, the peak. It doesn't say anything about what's happening above and below it. Unless somebody's got official torque curves all this talk is pointless and no one here can intelligently comment on the topic.
