Actually, the boost on the current 9-3 is limited in both 1st and 2nd gears. And peak torque is only 300 rpm higher and this was done to provide a more progressive torque curve. And since the higher rpm for the torque peak should mean higher road speed, the car should be able to put down the torque more effectively so traction becomes less of an issue. The better suspension should also allow the car to put the torque down more effectively.
So higher horsepower, higher torque, less weight(for the engine, aluminum block) where's the downside to this?
And regarding the 175 horsepower engine, several of the people who have driven it have commented that it feels like more than 175 hp. We have been speculating that Saab may be under promising and over delivering. This would make sense if you consider the 9-5 Linear only has 185 hp. It would make sense if you had less hp in the smaller car.
