I too was surprised at the lightness of the steering and I went back for a second and third test drive. The steering is indeed very light but it is not at all 'vague'. On the contrary, it is quite precise. It might have been the lightness that gave the initial impression of vagueness. I think, I could come to like the steering.
A big problem, as you note, is the lack of visibility. My 2001 VW Passat wagon is far better in this regard.
I am surprised you liked the handling of the new Passat. It seems to me far inferior to that of either my old Passat or, especially, the new SC.
The 2.0T is a very satisfying engine indeed and has all the power I would want. I cannot see giving up the fuel mileage by getting an Aero. (Except for the lack of side support on the 2.0T seats.)
