I went through the academy in early October. I had a 2003 9-3 Linear launch package, and now have a 2006 9-3 Aero, so good experience with 9-3s. Wife and I drove a 2006 9-5 before deciding on the Aero. The 9-5 has many excellent characteristics, but braking doesn't match 9-3, turbo lag is pronounced, and handling is not quite as nimble.
At the Aero Academy, the differences were nullified in some exercises, but overall the same observations were sustained. The 9-3 did better in the tighter events, and may have had a slight advantage in the autocross. They switched us from 9-3 to 9-5 at the last minute for the autocross, and the 9-5 did surprisingly well.
I did not sense the significant difference in braking at the academy, so maybe my experience with drive at my dealer was unique to the car I tested.
Overall, I'd say 9-3 had modest but discernable advantage in acceleration, braking, and handling at the academy.
