One thing to keep in mind is that although there are some pretty good performace-oriented all season tires out there (I've had the Pirelli PZero Nero, Kumho Ecsta ASX, Sumitomo HTR+, Conti Extreme Contact), their tread depth is not as great as winter tires. I live and drive in central New Jersey and Eastern PA and put between 25K to 30K miles on my car per year. Since performance tires don't last much longer than that, I can't guarantee that the tread depth is always going to be good enough for the winter unless I buy a new set of tires at the beginning of each winter. I use a separate set of wheels and (winter) tires so I can stretch the mileage on each set of tires so I can ensure better tread depth for the winter. My winter tires last maybe 3 years that way. If your yearly mileage is more normal (12K - 15K) you can probably get away with it. I would look for tires with longer tread life (albeit giving up a bit of performance) in that case, probably H or V-rated.
