Bryan,
Another tire that you may want to consider adding to your list to check out/investigate is the Yokohama AS430. This tire is perhaps a bit of gamble because I think its relatively new and only sold by certain common tire chains...but it does look interesting.
One chain in particular that I am in no way associated with is currently having a "buy 4 get one free sale" til the end of Dec that will drop the price for a set about $90 (where I am about $325 for a set installed before tax).
This tire (AS430) is supposed to be the same compound as the Avid H4/V4 series but with a modified tread cut (solid center piece, two main water grooves instead of 4 etc).
I had a set of Avid H4 (the version before the revised "H4S") on my C900T and liked the very low noise and excellent grip on dry and wet (really good wet traction...too much really). Steering feel was a bit mushier than optimal but the tires were predictable and over time I grew to like them as my brain adjusted.
The newer compound in the H4S and presumably AS430 is rated for higher miles so it should be less soft and the solid center rib may help the steering feel. The H4 tires were soft enough to feel like I had a second suspension (they would make rough roads and cracks feel smoother...and with the firm C900T suspension it worked well for city driving). The H4 would have been perfect if they would have tightend up the steering feel just a bit (so I'm hoping they did that with the AS430 mods).
I'm picking up a set of the AS430 for my girlfriends Civic this weekend and should be able to report back on how they work on that car (the sale made the price right and she isn't real picky when it comes to tires so its not a big gamble). The Kumho Solus KH16 also looked promising in reviews as a less costly but well performing all season tire but I couldn't find any shops locally that carried it. I also found the stock Pirelli P6's to be pretty good all around for me (but I've heard there are two versions sold....a really bad P6 and the better ones that came stock on the 93...not sure how to tell the diff...haven't tried them in snow much yet). I generally don't push the limits to extremes but just want a tire with good wet/dry traction, precise steering feel, solid straight tracking on highway, and low noise (just to give you an idea where I'm coming from).
Good luck
Pat
