To follow up on a previous posting on a clients 2005 9-3 2.0T 115k miles.
Called Saab and dealer just to make sure, no coverage. Talked to a few Saab techs and most said to R&R the engine with a used replacement. Got in contact with a Saab tech named Justin in North Carolina from Anders/Swedcar here on TSN. Justin told me about a GM cooling system additive he has used in seven 9-3s to cure this condition. He also has used it twice on 9-5 v6 where the oil cooler has failed. The GM part number is 3634621 "Cooling System Seal Tabs", costs $5ea, which come 6 per pack. Did some poking around online and found Saturn techs use these often. Parts guy at the GM dealer said they sell lots of them and had 36 packages in stock! Tech at the other counter said they work great and a neighbor tech also said he has used the Bars brand seal tabs.
Diluted 2 tabs into a glass of water, poured directly into the coolant tank and then topped off with coolant. Previously was losing 1/4 gallon of coolant every 40 miles. Happy to say after one week and 624 miles she has not had to add any coolant at all to the vehicle.
Im not one at all to believe in additives and other "magic" leak fixers. Figured this would be a hail mary before engine R&R. Turns out, it worked great and surprisingly fast too. Will post later if any problem arises.
The thing I cannot get over though, the two main ingredients for these sealing tabs... Ginger and Almond Shells. Yea.
