Yes I'm board that removing the clamp has to be the best way to do it. The original clamp bolt is supposed to go into a threaded piece of plastic that is easy to strip. My clamp bolt has a flat-blade screwdriver slot on top and goes to a nut under the tray- not stock. My thinking is that I had the second or so battery replaced at the dealer, they broke the original clamp setup, and put this in place of it. It feels like some sort of retaining nut and it's difficult to remove. This car will be 20 years old in September and you tend to forget little bits from past service visits. The mind plays tricks on you, and I still think of it as a new-ish car. lol It only has 37,000 miles and essentially looks and performs as new.
