The old unit did measure ok for resistance locked/unlocked on the bench. New unit did fix the problem though.
When the window lock button on the door is used it looks like the BCM must look at the position sense as you can hear the motor actuate. The sense was probably working intermittently and causing the odd lock/unlock.
For anyone else doing this I took one look at the through the door handle approach in the car and decided it was going not be fun. I pulled the glass out to do it. This was much easier than I expected!
