'03 9-3SS Arc 2.0L 6 speed manual, leased new and then bought out, 37,300 miles. For the past few years the shift knob will pop off on its own. I know I have seen this mentioned a number of times, along with responses like cutting the spring. What I find odd is that it never happened for let's say 15+ years and then began increasing in frequency. I'd think that spring under the knob would get weaker over time rather than stronger. Does it in hot or cold weather. Kind of comical as I will go out to the car and the shift knob is in the driver's seat. I don't believe there was anything else under the knob which fell out the first time it occurred. I have a pair of heavy duty metal snips from the 1970's and I could not cut that spring. It kept popping out of the snips. I'd probably have to hack saw the darn thing, unless there is a better solution. I don't want to epoxy the knob onto the shaft for obvious reasons. For now I left the spring out but I don't want to drive it on the street with no reverse lockout. I mainly just start it in the driveway once or twice per week in order to keep the battery charged (have to get a small mounted battery tender) and listen to some streaming (FM radio adapter). I have worked from home since around 2012 and almost all of the miles were put on prior to then.
