I just got a 1999 9-5 SE 2.3 to replace my long-serving 1983 BMW 533i daily driver. In my very limited experience with the SAAB, it is much lighter-feeling in virtually every dynamic respect. Structually both are quite solid. The BMW is a 5-speed while the SAAB is an automatic - I chose the slushbox because I drove a couple of cars with a manual and was disgusted by the vague shifts and heavy, dead-feeling clutch. My 21 year old, 235k mile BMW with original unrebuilt shifter has infinitely better shift quality. The BMW has had its share of problems, but all were ancillary systems - nothing in the drivetrain except for a diff that slowly ate itself last year. Frankly I'm a bit concerned by the engine problems that seem to be cropping up in SAABs - the bulletproof nature of the BMW big six (M30 engine) is a very good thing (235k miles and stills happily winds up to the redline).

More than anything I will miss rear-wheel drive, but learning to push a front driver will be interesting. I still have my 1974 BMW 2002 to play with in the summer, so I should be able to manage.
