I just made a switch similar to the one you're thinking about. I drove a '91 Jetta GLI for the past 14 years. The car was still in excellent shape and fun to drive, but a job change meant I needed more cargo capacity (yup, more than the huge Jetta trunk!).
I couldn't bring myself to get an SUV or minivan, so I looked at wagons. Audi and recent VW wagons didn't get great reliability reviews; Volvo was in the picture; Subaru just wasn't exciting to drive. The 9-5 wagon was just the ticket--right combination of cargo capacity, gas mileage, good reliability, and driving comfort and performance.
I'm happy with the switch.
