I have owed three Saabs, 1985 900 turbo, 1994 9000 CSE, and most recently a 2001 9-5 Aero. My wife did not like her big american SUV anymore and I traded it for brand new 2001 XC70. So far we have put 50K with no mechanical problems. (Knock,, Knock) The XC is very comfotable and has decent power with good cornering. (For a wagon) The reason I liked it for my wife is the idea of put the key in and drive. There is nothing to mess with in bad weather. The car takes care of everything unless it is really bad then you can push the winter mode. (Never needed yet). When I drive it the manual mode for the transmission can be fun. The transmission is fairly rough compared to the 9-5 Aero. The Aero is very smooth shifting and starting out. The Volvo seems to grab starting out but in the manual mode the shifting feels more like a standered..

The problems we have had have been very minor electrical stuff. All taken care of under warranty.

However, I am a FAA certified mechanic and enjoy doing my own maintenace. New Volvos are not ment to be worked on. You can't even buy replacement windshield wipers unless you go through Volvo.. I read a post on the Volvo board where the Throttle body gets cloged with grit every 50K and shuts the engine down and the only fix is to replace it. Cleaning is almost impossible due to the location. I will have to take the intake manifold off to clean it.. There is a oil filter on the market and I can change the oil but that is about it. (By the way Wolfs Head 10W-30 every 5K no sludge..)

Overall it has been a very good car for my wife and she enjoys driving it. I prefer the Saab for me.
