Wilbur, right on for throwing the information out there - the argument is water tight to a vehicle collision reconstuctionist like me.
The K in the formula is the reciprocal of 2 times the friction factor times the acceleration, in which the friction factor can vary from 0.4 for wet roads (lower for ice) to 0.8 for a rough pavement, and acceleration is 32.2 feet per second squared ( or 9.806 metres per second squared in metric).
Interestingly, the braking distance DOES NOT depend on the type of car, since the mass increase of a larger car balances out with the larger perpendicular forces applied to the tire contact patch area. But you can see from the constant that poor tire materials or slippery road conditions can radically increase the stopping distance because you are dividing by a smaller number when the friction factor is lower. Thus, on ice, you can double your stopping distance, without changing anything else, and assuming the brakes can lock up the wheels and tires, or at least get them close to doing so.
Cheers,
CrNiFe
