Are they perhaps saying that you have to kick in $3500 to drive off in an equivalent new car?

If so, that doesn't sound too bad, because you reset the "mileage clock" back to zero and have a warranty that goes almost through 2004. (Still, the $3500 may be negotiatiable. Perhaps you can counter: "$2500 and you toss in a CD changer.")

I would hold that your purchase price is irrelevant, because you can't be "punished" for getting a good deal originally. It's not as though they'd give you a new car and two thousand bucks if you'd paid $40k for yours.
