Agreed. GM can't afford to be unique or creative right now. It's a shame & it's because they lost the creative touch that they can't afford it now.
Think back to all the Jelly Bean cars of the '80s. everyone was doing aerodynamic, but didn't understand it enough to be creative & flex it.
Now with the new European pedestrian safety standards, pretty much all cars sold in Europe will likely have a very similar shape to the front end until they learn how to meet the reg's & massage the shape. I'd bet the Saturn (Ion?) & new 9-5 nose both meet the new regulations. It's just another adolesence period of car design. Keep in mind when cars were really good looking there were mainly just 3 car companies in this country (to speak of), no MPG concerns, minimal gov't regulations to deal with, IE: design was easier then!
