Just had this disucssion with my boss who has a 1998 Volvo S80 with 187K on it and has a bad valve ( 2200 for the valve job)
If you figure that any new or used car would be at least a payment of at least $350, if you kept ypour car for just 10 months you would save $3500 in payments ( and not experience much depreciaion on the value of the underlying asset) At least you would be able to defer the payments to a future date ( if you paid it and decided to get a different car in the future) at most defer pyaments for two or trhree more years.
And you will need to repair the car if you wish to presaerve the value ( although about 5K ) of your current underlying asste. It could be worth less if you did not fix- maybe even as much as the repairs.
