I am not sure your version is right. Both spacers come from the same bearing and have shared all the heat and lubrication (it is a double ring type bearing). One of the spacers is intact and all of the balls in it are perfect. The other spacer is destroyed and all the balls are scuffed by roughly the same amount which seem has occured after the spacer breakage.
Yes, it is still unknown what caused the spacer failure in the first place but I don't think it was anything major. A failed bearing in my Datsun 200sx (quite a few years ago) had two adjacent balls extremely scuffed yet the steel spacer in that bearing was ok as well as the rest of the balls. Were a steel spacer in this bearing it would still be probably operational with possible slightly pitted a sigle ball.
By the way - what is the highest mileage people get from their bearings? This is a question to people with 100k+ on their cars.
Also, the bearing/hub have been redesigned in 2002 - now it is a single unserviceable unit.
