What starts a wheel bearing breakdown is usually a tiny little defect/damage to the inner or outer race.
That defect/damage can be caused by hitting a curb too hard or a soft spot in the hardening process.
When the ball bearings are rolled over and over against that little defect, it will grow bigger and bigger and the noise will get louder.
When it goes as far as it has in your case, the noise is almost unbearable but many times, the driver doesn't notice since they have been driving the car on a regular basis and gotten used to the noise.
When I test drive a car like that I can't understand that the noise was not the first on the list of their complaints.
The plastic keeper have most likely just been worn down by all the metal pieces/shavings rumbling around in there together with the rough surface of the ball bearings.
Heat on that side of the bearing will most likely also take its toll, that doesn't mean the heat is as high on the other side of the bearing.
