Front wheel bearing failure - analysis.

The passenger side front wheel bearing in our 2000 lpt 9-5 failed at 78k miles. It started making humming noise that grew rather unbearable over 1000-2000 miles. I had it replaced with an OEM bearing (made by SKF) at Wayland Automotive (Wayland, MA). That cost me 2 hrs or labor (at $78/hour) plus $44 for the bearing at eeuropart.com
Out of interest I requested the old bearing back and took it apart. It seems that the plastic spacer inside one half of the bearing had disintegrated. Eventually the BBs started contacting each other and their surface has deteriorated. See the pictures below.
If I had to do it again I would propably use some aftermarket bearing. This design does not look bulletproof to me.
