The manual suggests winter tires for winter driving. Even the Mercedes commercial for the AWD car suggests winter tires.
The other day I watched somebody in a Subaru Legacy crash into a tree. They were fine and I could her hear her saying "But I have all wheel drive?!?". Snow tires make a huge difference. 4 are necessary by the way.
Given the choice, FWD and snow tires is a better choice than AWD and regular tires. I guess I'd take AWD and snow tires as the ultimate but I don't want to pay the added fuel consumption of AWD.
My wife's 9-5 is fantastic in the snow but there's no way I would drive it in the snow with the stock tires.
