I always try DIY stuff. actually, there are many small things I left off my list that I DIY or simply removed like the moonroof wind deflector. I do all my own brake, fluid, and filter replacements and services. but, anyone want to walk me through changing the A/C evaporator? even my Indy refuses to work on Saabs anymore. he did all my '94 900 work. he's Merc and BMW only now. he couldnt believe how much it took to replace the alternator! have to jack the engine off the engine mounts!!!??? I dont want to have to do that much myself. and now when contacting other Indys I am finding their prices are about 90% of dealer anyway as all the parts are Saab only and they have to get their parts from Saab which makes their parts costs higher than say online mailorder Saab parts for DIY!! dealer has even been knocking off 10-20% (sympathy discounts). I also dont have time as father of 3 small kids to have my work commuter car down in the driveway for 2 weeks while I attempt DIY repairs. I have got a few good answers on this site for the evaporator over last weeks but nothing concrete help. so, seems I will have to take that in as well to dealer next week. once that is fixed, car will be perfect (it's cosmetically beautiful) and I plan to post it in the classifieds so one of you good DIY will get a great car. I think that is best. like one person said, if DIY then affordable but I am just not in that position right now. the biggest problem I see is the parts cost too. everything is Saab only and is $500-$1000 even online. this is my 3rd Saab and I am a loyal Saab lover. since college I have had nothing but Saabs. but, I think Saab has priced me out. new Saab car prices arent bad and I could get $10k off on new one right now! but I cant afford to buy a new car every 5 years to get new warr and I cant afford to repair anymore. paid $2000+ for Warr Gold ext warr and 6 mos later the underwriter went insolvent thus no warr. learned hard lesson there too. I just cant win on this car. I used to get my '83 900s repaired by Indies for $100-200 a pop. repairs on the 9-5 are 5x as expensive. that's crazy. I;d love for someone to talk me out of this. believe me. the car looks like a 15k mile car cosmetically. I am very detailed and perfectionist (typical Saab type) so hate to part with it. but...
maybe I could buy a $200 plane ticket for one of you good DIY to come down to south FL for a weekend to help me replace my evap!!!
sorry for long note but I am at my rope's end I think. thanks for your help and advice to all.
just one last thing about quality. I think these three words say it all:
CRACKED FUEL TANK !!!!!!!!!??????????
