Linked below is the oil analysis I had done on the factory ATF in my '01 9-5 at 60k miels. The analysis showed that the fluid was done for, and I am glad I did a complete replacement.
If your car went 84k without a fluid change it's certainly possible that the old fluid just couldn't hack it anymore.
I am due for at least a drain and fill this fall, which would be 2 years and about 15k miles since the last one. The semi-synth ATF I used (http://www.specialtyformulations.com) is no longer available in Dexron III so I am going to use the Red Line brand full synthetic.
