It is so many urban legends and wife's tales out there and it is also helped by the dealer stand point (backed by the car maker) in that many fluids are filled for life and no need to change.
So when the car finally gets out of the dealer claws, it "might" be to late to change the fluid and the transmission fails which it would have done anyway due to the dirty fluid.
I cannot understand why dirty worn out fluid filled with silt from all moving parts wearing down, is better than fresh clean fluid.
It's the same story all over again as with the C900 manual transmissions having a bad reputation because the fluid never had to be replaced and then the dirty particle filled fluid was allowed to pass through the pinion bearing over and over again, pitting the bearing races.
The key is to get going early changing the fluid so that you don't reach the point of that the transmission is just being held together with a thick goo of post fluid.
