Do manual transmissions get better with exercise? Posted by Caarl [Email] (#447) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Caarl) on Mon, 23 Jul 2007 08:53:27 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I noticed some change in shifting in my 2000 9-5 Aero since buying it at 17,000 miles. It's now at 43,000 and going into 3rd and 4th is intermittently a bit harder than it used to be. I reported this while it was under warranty but of course the dealer said "no fault found".
Well here's the fun part. I took a performance driving class where you take your own car out and drive as fast as you can around Portland International Raceway with an instructor. (This was a major blast, needless to say.) So I was shifting quite a bit harder than normal. Not really slamming it into gear, though. I also downshifted a lot at higher RPMs than normal, like down into third decelerating toward a turn at 70 MPH.
My shifting feels a lot better now! Did my synchros just need some exercise? Should I drive the **** out of my Aero more often? The class was certainly a lot cheaper than most repair bills I've ever seen, not to mention being somewhat more fun than a visit to the shop.
And should there be a new abbreviation like DTS or DTP to mean what I just said?
