I was just being cynical (what else is new!?!)
It IS a matter of communication and collaboration. That's true with an indy as well. My indy and I have a great relationship because he listens to me and I trust his judgment. Over 12 years has shown him to be right most of the time.
My local dealer here in southern NH seems OK until you start to talk to him. Then it's more obvious that they prefer to hose customers when given a chance. They do good work, but I feel as if they look for ways to take advantage of customers. Even on something as mundane as an oil change. Their policy is to routinely put in an oil additive ($9.95 extra) but not to use Mobil 1 unless the customer specifies it. Their default oil is Mobil 5000 or 7500. This on a car which customers think can go 10,000 miles between changes.
I've had a few casual conversations with the service manager, sort of letting him know that I have a bit more than a turn-the-key-and-drive knowledge of cars and realized the store is likely to go for the most expensive solution to every problem. He tried to tell me once that front brakes--rotors and pads--was something like $800. Not for me.
Our 9-5 wagon had a leaking rear shock and they said they'd replace both. But when they did the job--my wife took the car in as I was away--they only did one. So we called up and they had her come back to do the other. And she had to argue with them to get it done. Life's too short for that kind of thing.
The 9-5 is CPO, so I'll go there for stuff that's covered, but my indy will get the rest or any stuff I don't do.
But to me, not using a dealer is also an economic issue. Assuming the quality of work done and parts used are the same, there's no need to pay $90-100/hour at a dealer versus $70 at an indy who also charges less for parts, or even lets me bring in my own.
