DON'T BY ANY MEANS RULE OUT THE V6!!! I have a 2001 SE V6 sedan. It's a great car! Mine's got over 170k miles on it right now and is still running like a champ. The turbo puffs a little blue smoke when I start it up but that's not a big deal. Yeah, it's had some problems, but they're things you'll get with any 9-5, like crankshaft position sensor or DICs which were covered under recall. While the V6 needs a timing belt and tensioners every 60k miles, it doesn't have PCV problems, sludge, head bolt, or head gasket problems. If you like the V6 when you look at it, go for it. Don't forget to hit the "S" sport button on the top of the shifter. It turns it into a whole different car. Here are some things to look for:
1. Ask the guy if the car has been started in the past couple hours. If not, start it up, and run around back to the tailpipe. If there's a puff of BLUE smoke you may have a turbo failure. $2,000 to fix, but you can run it forever like that, just watch the oil level.
2. While the car is running and WARMED UP all the way, hold down the "AUTO" and "OFF" buttons simultaneously on the air conditioning control. If anything other than a "0" pops up on the left, report back.
3. Dead pixels in the SID (computer over the stereo headunit).
4. When the timing belt and tensioners were last replaced.
Good Luck!
