I think the answer to your question depends on what you want out of your car and your tires. If you choose a tire that will last for 80,000 miles, then it will most likely have a hard rubber compound. This will last for a long time, but at the expense of handling. Unfortunately, you can't have both. If you cruise on the highway most of the time and cornering isn't a major concern for you, then this may be an acceptable trade off.
I've had exclusively Pirelli tires on my 9-5s, and here are my quick comments:
-Pirelli P-6. I've had two sets. They handle reasonably well, and I'd put the treadwear life at about 40,000 miles. They are extremely loud after about 15,000 miles. I wouldn't recommend them or buy them again.
-Pirelli P-Zero Rosso. This was the OEM tire on my 2004 Aero. It was outstanding for dry pavement handling in warm weather. It was terrible in the rain, impossible in the snow, and they lasted only 16,000 miles. Unless you're a freak for handling, I wouldn't buy these.
Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S. I am currently running these on my Aero. They handle almost as well as the Rossos on dry, handle better in rain, and are passable in snow. I've got 35,000 miles on them now and they need to be replaced. If you're looking for an all-season tire that performs well, I would recommend them. I will buy another set.
As for your comments about leaning towards a P-Zero and wanting to get 80,000 miles out of them... I think that's extremely unlikely.
I hope this helps.
