I couldn't tell you if the '02's are any better or worse at searching. I do know that if you keep up with transmission fluid changes on the autos, they are very strong, reliable transmissions. I think the early 5-spd autos had some weird sensor and software things that would need to be updated if they're not already, but that's about it. Any car with an automatic is going to search for the best gear to be in, I wouldn't let this be a deciding factor in your decision to buy a car though.
