...Our experience with the auto on our 2003 showed the transmission letting the turbo do the work except when we were climbing a particularly steep hill; then it would drop down into fourth. There was no "hunting" involved and the change would generally take place at about the same place in the assent where a prudent driver would drop down a gear w/a manual. When towing a trailer on the same steep hills, the shift would take place earlier in the climb with another downshift before we'd reach the top. Again, it always very controlled and expected. Our new tow vehicle, another European wagon with horsepower and torque similar to the Saab's but with no turbo and a 6 speed auto, does tend to shift sooner and more often on those same hills.
