Argument has been made that the 03 is the best year for the 9-5, but that's very subjective.
I purchased an 04 Linear SW last fall. If you're looking for the most practical version, the Linear is it. While it doesn't have the horsepower and handling of the Aero, it doesn't need the extra horsepower for most driving, it does ride better than the Aero, has better ground clearance, is better in the snow, and doesn't have 17" rims that are very susceptible to pothole damage. It's also much lower priced.
If you want something closer to your SPG, buy an Aero, it will still be tighter, quieter, smoother down the road and much more civilized that your SPG, but having transitioned from the 900 to the 9000 many years ago, I got to the point where I much preferred the 97 CSE to my 94 Aero for the reason you mention, ride quality.
Driving at 8/10ths of the cars capabilities, the Linear will do most everything the Aero will, if you need more than that, better keep looking.
