I prefer gas engines, too, but when it comes to getting much better fuel mileage I want a turbo diesel rather than the complexity of electrics or hybrids. I'm hoping my next car will be a turbo diesel, and I'd prefer it to be a Saab. But I'll jump ship if necessary.
As for 4-cylinder engines in the US, it's a matter of education. Most four cylinder engines in boring econoboxes with zip performance. Except for Saab, we've haven't had many cars with turbo fours in the US, so the average person doesn't realize how good they can be, and that they don't give up anything. Given the state of fuel prices, I suspect that i Americans get a taste of 4-cyl turbos in mainstream makes (like most of what GM sells) they'll like the fuel economy and performance.
