I don't buy into this logic. A car always depreciates at the highest rate in the first two years. Buying a 2-3yr old car (even a CPO) will not depreciate at as high of a rate.

I bought my 2004 at 49K for $11K. If it dies in one year, I'll still have lost less money overall than driving a brand new car for one year. How does buying new make more financial sense?
