I'm getting the sense that dealer repair rates and time estimates have escalated a lot and that is much more responsible for these sob stories than reliablity issues with the car.
I don't care what car you buy, things will break. But when $500 repair gets generated for 2 hour's work that can be done in 1/2 hour and parts are charged at 3x a fair rate, then what should have been a few thousand dollars in repairs over a few years turns out to be $10,000...or more.
With dealer charges through the roof and good indys few and far between, Saabs are cars that need to be owned by driveway mechanics. It's the only way to assure that you're not being ripped off.
In my case, I know enough about auto repair to sense when I'm being fed a line of crap. Believe me,internal bulls**t meter has spiked on many such occasions. I pity the average woman who has to deal with this. And even if you are car-savvy, you need to be willing to do your own work when the dealer refuses to back off their price.
Bottom line: I think cars are much better than their repair history might indicate.
