Maybe I'm more of a bottom feeder, but certainly, looking at the current crop of 9-5 lease returns around here, 2004 9-5's are going for around 30-40% of the cost of a new one. Typical mileage is generally 40-60k, not that many <40k... 2001's at around 100k seem to go for 10-20% of the cost of a new one... So losing 60-70% in the first 4 years and 20-30% in the next 3...
It is possible if people are buying rare low mileage cars used at premium pricing and keeping them for 1 or 2 years, that it might not work out in their favor, but depreciation on a new car is killer... a car is rarely a good investment! almost always cheaper to fix a car than buy a new one (unless you're doing major repairs at a dealer)... so buying used and keeping it a while can save a lot of cash (but like you say, then you're not driving a new car, so depends on what you like)...
James...
