You can try springs (& dampers) first. One my car new springs and dampers did almost nothing for the ride height. The problem was a deformed subframe. That is why the cars still sag when unloaded. Any spring sag is nominal compared to the deformation of the subframe. As far as I know there is no way to prevent the replaced subframe from deforming again.
The problem affects both sport and non-sport suspension 9-5s so I don't know what you would gain from going to the non-sport spring. You would have a little more static ride height but the issue is related to dynamic loading of the subframe which there is no way that I know of to change.
Ride height affects the cars handling. If you have lost unloaded ride height then loaded the car could have potentially unpredictable handling characteristics.
It would be great if someone could conduct a shim experiment where they take alignment readings with shims, load the car and drive say 5K, then take unloaded alignment readings. I bet the subframe will deform more so that the alignment will be off even with shims and will not be able to come back into spec even with shims.
Would you be willing to contact my NHTSA contact? They are looking for input from folks with Saab service experience. I sent you an email.
Keep us posted. I'm curious as to what you find given your Saab service experience.
