I just unplugged the pump when my died to keep it from blowing the fuse for my A/C blower and I drove around for a month that way. The fuse never blew but it took about a week for the computer to realize something was up with the exhaust to throw a CEL. You could just unplug it and get a cheap code reader and clear the code every once in a while it pops up. You're probably not going to pass emissions like this though. I spent nowhere near $500 replacing mine. More like $150 for the pump and one of the valves. The valve was $50 so it'll probably cost you $200 if you DIY.
