In the near future, there should be some very attractive prices on Saabs. Could be that you'll be able to buy a new one at the price of a used one. Who knows what you can get by the time November rolls around and the current fog is beginning to clear. The TDI price may stay up there. 'Course a VW TDI might hold its value better than a Saab.

Some owners swear by VW, some at them and (it seems) many swear at their dealers. I wonder about the cost of diesel fuel when prices spike again. Around me, diesel is always over premium gas and at one point was at $5.00 a gallon. Ouch!

Do diesels match your driving style? -- I've heard that diesels are happiest as cruisers (like Saabs), and that the diesel gets cranky if asked to putter along in traffic. I candidly admit that's a rumor which I can't speak to from personal experience. But if I were in your shoes, I'd want to look into it before the payment book arrived.

Last time I visited True Delta I seem to remember that new TDIs were clocking a lot of dealer visits per 100 vehicles, though they seemed to settle down with age.

Just a thought -- Check the VW CC Passat. I was at a VW dealership last week and they had one on the floor with an MSRP of $27K. It had the turbo 4 from the GTI, if I recall. Loaded, with the 6-cyl, the CC can be $40K+. I said to the sales guy the 4-cyl was a much better value than the 6. He looked around to be sure the boss was in his office and then said, "I agree." The only thing about the CC that would have taken some getting used to from my '99 9-5 was the claustrophobic feel. It's a 4-door coupe with a high hip line, so there's not as much glass as I'm accustomed to to.

And as others have said, if you like your current Saab, keeping it would be the value consumer's choice.

Good luck with your choice.
