No need to worry about how to measure tensioner, figured that out.. as I suspected, timing chain was toast.. tensioner was maxed all the way out (21 mm)and there was almost 1 inch of play in chain when forcing up and down with tensioner in.. also chain was sloppy/real loose side to side.. cam sprockets don't look bad, compared them face to face and all seemed to line well and no apparent one side wear.. if chain is that toast, afraid of what main bearings and other internal parts are well worn, such as balancing chain??

Timing chain quides from what I can see have apparent groving, not very deep but can only see top sections..cam cover guide slightly grooved also

I assume since all is broken down, just need to split old chain, connect new chain and pull through?

Also lined up crankshaft timing mark exactly before tore down and both camshafts were about 1/8" before timing marks?? there were 15 links between exhaust cam sprocket top mark to intake sprocket mark.. turned cams to line up with timing marks and crankshaft was at least 1/2" past mark?? could this be chain stretch or was timing off by one tooth all along from someone else's prior repair? if so, what could/would that do to overall running and performance?

Head gasket was split at front #4 top and bottom layer and ring around same cylinder was peeled from gasket.. hard to tell in looking at HG if there were other apparent leaks, as when pulled head the headgasket pulled of and got covered in oil and antifreeze (quite heavy by myself with intake on)..

Pulled cams and lifters, not sure what to look for in lifters? some insides of lifters spin real clean, others have hitched feel when spinning?

One last note for now that may be of help to others who chose to pull head with intake on... no need to pull alternator or that #!$% alterntor bracket... after pulling alternator aside and feeling for missing bolts to remove bracketto no credit to WIS), I scoped it out and thought I could leave it on.. low and behold, only removing the 2 top bolts did the trick.. I could have saved at least an hour fumbling with it had I scoped ot out sooner!!

yanked the WP.. was slightly loose on shaft and underside weep hole was full of dex cool color jelly like substance??

Air filter box was smashed and large chunks missing out of it, air intake pipe was also torn at accordian section near air box.. this must have affected something??

Don't yet know where to bring head to have looked at/worked on in my area, still searching.. hope I don't have to ship out... want to get this back together asap..

regards and thanks for the input..
