Remove the neg first and re-attach last. Get both cables off and be careful not to short across them with a metal object. Clean the terminals with one of those battery terminal cleaners - it has a wire brush in an 'O' shape that goes over the trminal and turns one way to clean it. Also use the other brush to clean inside the cable clamps. Consider also removing and cleaning/checking the connector to the starter motor solenoid - it has to carry a lot of current and is another point of failure. The wire itself can get corroded inside the sheathing. When you get them all back on grease the connectors to reduce corrosion.
