if you can't resolve this quickly and cheaply you deserve to be in mega ultra deep poop :-)
Dont jump to "bad alternator"!
if you don't know how to use the volt meter thing, no problem. Take the car to an autozone, advance, or what have you, and have them:
1 - test the battery.
2 - load-test the battery
3 - test the alternator output
they do it for free right in the parking lot.
if everything checks out you need to get down and dirty and check/replace the pos and neg cables. Common failure mode is:
1 - creeping corrosion at the positive cable on the battery
2 - loose connection/corrosion at the starter
3 - bad ground due to corrosion at the point that the ground cable attaches to the body.
ps sorry to hear about loosing your job. that sucks.
