Well I notice you mention the 1998 - 2005 9-5 . I have a 1999 and a 2004. The 1999 is pretty lame when compared to the 04 in terms of ride and the power the I4 makes - I can't think of many cars in the price range that didn't eclipse the 1998 and 1999 9-5 in terms of performance and ride .
And I did test drive a 2006 and didn't feel that much difference in the car from the 2004 ARC, but yes the interior controls are a big improvement in ease of use and intuitiveness from those archaic push button controls, IMO they are almost a safety issue as you have to look at them for almost any adjust and figure out which button(s) to push.
Let's hope the 2010 9-5 is a good as it needs to be.
