Japanese cars are often like that!

Every Japanese car I've driven has that characteristic. Aside from lacking low end torque, they tend to be geared to be too fast off the line, like 0-10mph times are all that matter! It's dumb because although it sells cars, it wastes a gear. Then they have to downshift every time you pass a car or go up a hill on the highway. Very annoying!
I found the Mazda 5 was the worst in that respect. It wanted to get into fifth at low speeds (for fuel economy?) + then was forever dropping 2 gears, even around town... drove me crazy! But even the 2008 Subaru Legacy was bad that way - fun around town, but always downshifting on the highway. And because it was a 4 speed auto, it's cruising RPMs were high + fuel economy was only about 10% better than a C900 with 3 speed! ie bad!
Drove a 2001 9-3 over the weekend with 4 speed auto + it was pretty good (been a while since I drove one). In sport mode, it is more keen to downshift, but was plenty fast without. We've been shopping 9-5's for a while + have liked them too. Saabs have much better gear ratios that take advantage of the turbo.
