Subaru makes nice cars, and my wife has a 2000 Legacy Outback Wagon. When it comes to fit and finish as well as seat comfort, it doesn't hold a candle to my much older 9000 Aero. I can't drive the thing more than an hour or so without bringing my own (pillow/down vest/whatever) form of lumbar support.
That said, it's a great snow car...
I haven't sat in the newer (or newest) legacy/outback Subies, so I can't comment directly on them, but my experience with their older (pre-'04?) cars is that they're in an entirely different league than the BMW and Audi. (I haven't sat in a Merc since I rode in the back of a '98 E350... Mercedes have never appealed to me much... now that they actually manufacture a car with a stick shift, I might sit in one sometime.)
I'd drive all of them, and then decide. I too would opt for the wagon, but that's me. Perhaps I could talk into a nice 335xi touring?
I'd still go test drive a new 9-3 with XWD.
