I'm sure some are good. By definition some must be good and some bad for the car to be unreliable. If all were bad, then the car would be reliably junk. I see three categories for cars: reliably good (i.e., very limited problems), unreliable (i.e., unpredictable), and reliably junk (I think this category is mainly for 1st year cars where the problems are consistent and known).
My guess is that more than 90% of the Cash for Clunkers cars are or could be made more reliable than my 9-5 for nominal cost (less money than my car currently needs).
Aside from the boringness of the Japanese cars, ask yourself why someone buys a Japanese car for more money than an American car? Also, ask yourself why Saab is so unpopular? The cars are a decent value until one considers the reliability concerns and associated depreciation.
Many Saabs are long lived with “normal” maintenance. The problem is that one could buy other cars and do none of that maintenance. I also have a Chevy which has some issues and is typical GM POS, but has way less problems than the much newer and lower mileage Saab and is far more reliable overall. The Saab benefits from its Scandinavian heritage and higher cost, but also has unneeded complexity and poorly designed systems which lead to the lack of reliability.
