Thanks very much for your comments. I will get to the rest of the job this weekend. I already have the turbo inlet pipe and rad hose out of the way because I have removed the leaking radiator the prompted this adventure.
On the source of the leak, I recall other posts here that agree with you on the oil cooler being a common coolant leak point. I will probably attend to that too while all this is apart and my car is off the road for a while anyhow. Looking closer, I can see coolant residue along both sides of the oil cooler housing and it looks like some has dribbled off the block and down the front cyclinder head at the transmisson end. There is a small ledge in the base of the block at the end of that cylinder head that has more coolant residue on it. The coolant that is around the base of the t'stat housing could easily have come from the oil cooler area.
