First, pull up the trim ring surrounding the shifter. DON'T use a screwdriver. Now is the perfect time to invest a little money in a set of cheap plastic trim removal tools from Harbor Freight or the like. Worth their weight in tin, at least for this job. I use the wide (better than inch and a half) one for the trim ring.
Then the flat panel is held in by 4 tabs. You can gently push the tabs in, while pulling up on the panel. You can do one at a time. Once that's up, you'll see the green strip. Pull up the rear part (no need to remove the front part) up. Below that is a small filter. Remove that, noting the orientation (the lighter part towards the front). The bulb is under the filter all the way at the back. The bulb is a #2821 (NOT the 2721 that is the instrument bulb. Also DON'T use a 5 watt or higher bulb here...). Harbor Freight has a pair of bulb pliers you can get for $5, or needle nose pliers, or hemostats, anything long and thin should be able to get a grip on the bulb. R&R the bulb.
Turn the ignition on to test.
Put the filter back on, put the green strip back in its slot, clip on the plastic panel, then clip on the trim piece.
If, for some reason, you can't get to the 4 tabs holding the panel in, you can take off the trim around the gearshift like this:
Remove the ashtray or cubby below the seat heater switches. Remove the seat heater, seat ventilation, or blank switches. Remove the two screws on the sides, where the ashtray or cubby was.
At the BACK of the trim, pry the trim forward slightly and up over the rear lip of the cutout in the console. Again, I recommend the wide plastic tool, NO SCREWDRIVERS!
Once you free the back side, pivot it up to where the front edge is released. Remove the connector for the lock switch, and perhaps the W switch, also, and set the panel aside.
Now you have unrestricted access to the tabs on the shifter top.
